Unusual material deformations or sustained material movements are key dynamic properties in responsive and active materials, respectively. While responsive materials change drastically their physicochemical properties in response to an external stimulus, active materials transduce energy into mechanical forces, thereby leading to a variety of emergent phenomena such as self-propulsion and patterning formation. Can we use active matter to engineer novel responsive materials? Can we link non-equilibrium physics to material science in an attempt to apply dynamics and fluctuations to the design of smart materials?
This satellite meeting seeks bringing together researchers from these fields, soft matter physics and material science, to open a new avenue of biophysical matter research built on the knowledge gained over these years on both the building blocks and the fundamental interactions that drive the behavior of active systems. Understanding the dynamics of these elements enables the development of synthetic materials that either mimic behaviors found in living matter or exploit the elements to improve materials properties.

"Complex Networks in the Life Sciences" is a satellite meeting of the EBSA 2019 Biophysics Congress. We will cover the application of network science to nature at all scales, from genetic or metabolic networks to social networks, ecology or climate. The plan is to join together people who work in the frontier between biology or environmental sciences and complex networks and discuss in a friendly environment about the present and future of the discipline.

Most of our contemporary knowledge about function(s) of cellular membranes has come from nanoscale analysis of membrane systems. The nano length-scale is set by functional compartmentalization, by subdivision of membrane systems of eukaryotic cells into functional nanodomains consisting of defined proteo-lipid mixtures. The most recent progress in functional analysis of proteo-lipid nanostructures involved in signal transduction, membrane remodeling and material transport in cells as well as emerging novel applications of proteo-lipid complexes in nanotechnology will be discussed by leading experts in the field.
